Pandemonium Big Band
United States
Приєднався 14 чер 2006
A jazz collective of the best players on the West Coast. Born out of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the impossibility of performing together in person, Pandemonium Big Band slaps hard.
Musical director and trumpeter Elliot Deutsch has been a fixture of the Los Angeles music scene for more than a decade, writing arrangements for a who's who of jazz performers including Arturo Sandoval, Take 6, Lalo Schiffrin, and many others. Presented with the challenge of leading a big band during the shutdown, Deutsch took the bull by the horns and ran with it.

Pandemonium Big Band collaborated recently with the amazing company CloudVocal. I arranged and recorded a play along track,. Now you can record a solo with Pandemonium Big Band while also competing for some amazing prizes... including a new saxophone, mouthpiece, wireless system, etc.
My solo was recorded using CloudVocals brand new FastTrack USB-C microphone. This mic is seriously good. It has become my go-to for laptop based recording sessions on the go, as well as quick sessions where I don't want to deal with the hassle of a complete setup. You've already hear tracks I recorded with this setup if you're listening to popular electro-swing artist Atom Smith!

In this lesson I show you how I orchestrate for a four trumpet section This is actually how I do it... in real time. This 8-bar melody took about 20 minutes to orchestrate. I am only slightly faster than that when I am writing on my own (without narration). Watch as I harmonize the melody using closed voicing. Then hear me talk through my considerations for choosing a particular voicing. Elliot...

For your viewing pleasure, here is our full set, uncut, with human error, etc. It was a hot, 100 degree evening at ArtShare_LA. That didn't stop over a hundred people from packing into the arts warehouse to enjoy three big bands: Lauren Baba's BABA Jazz Orchestra, Kim Richmond's Concert Jazz Orchestra, and Pandemonium Big Band. The sound isn't perfect: some of the solos are difficult to hear, t...

How to write for trumpet - Big Band Arranging SECRETS REVEALED
I used to play with a drummer named John Shackelford in the 70s and 80s. I wonder if they are related? Love the arrangement!
I loved your C7 vs C13 hint. I just realized that the C13 isn’t just the harmony being used, but it really conveys the message to the piano player that this is how far you can go.
Where have you been?
Fantastic, as always!!!! Thank you.
Absolutely wonderful, Elliot. Love the textures you create and your best tip-sing what you want to write. Oh year!! We’ll talk again soon!!
Have subbed!
Amazing work! Learn a lot!
wonderful!!! thank you very much
You guys are unbelievable! Keep posting videos! Your work is very important, for people who learned to play jazz improvise. But writing for a big band has remained a sacred mystery. I re-watch the lessons several times and enjoy your performances just as much. Good luck!
I've just "discovered" your channel. You do, in a couple of minutes, what it might take me a couple of weeks to finish. Amazing! I've been listening to recordings of Pandemonium Big Band, too. What an outstanding group of players you've assembled. Just THANKS! Good stuff, brother!
not accents - articulations 1. Staccato - short 2. Tenuto - play full value 3. Accent - emphasized, doesn’t imply anything about duration 4. Marcato - short + emphasized (in jazz) 5. Slur - full value, connected quarter note - could be short or long notes longer than quarter note - always long avoid dotted quarter with marcato short notes on the beat - quarter notes with marcato or staccato short notes on upbeat - eight note
wow very helpful tutorial. As a guitar player myself, I’m pretty fluent with music theory but not with how a big band horn section should sound. Thanks for giving me inspiration on how to write horns! Love from China. ❤
Great teacher - it’s a shame about the busy music when he is talking
Near the end, where you harmonised the D melody note as a non chord tone, even though it was the root - that was great!! If I was ever taught that, I had forgotten lol Great video, glad I watched it!! Going to watch the sax one next 😀
a lot of talking
Can you make a tutorial for big band arranging with strings?
Oh, MAN that COOKED!! best version since Buddy's band! Thanks!!!
Nice, I just explored your channel and fount it very cool and useful since I'm sax-player and I'm recording horn sections by myself. Thank you for sharing these valuable knowledges!
Yuh
This is just what I needed for writing horn parts. Thanks a bunch!
Great info....background music so good and loud...it distracts me from your lesson
Do you write the tenor and baritone parts in bass clef on the concert score or in treble clef
I’ve done it both ways. I usually do tenors in treble and bari in bass clef (concert score)
How did you found work in this field of writing for Big Bands?(it's a big question I know, but it's interesting for me)
It would be helpful to hear the chord progression examples as well as seeing them
Really helpful and concise
Why change melody note at end of bar 6 to B natural? The actual melody is Bb and you could harmonize as G7#9
Really interesting Tutorial. 👍😎
Interested that you said "Trumpets don't sound great voiced into 4 parts by themselves". Can you elaborate Elliot?
Have subbed!
Swingin’ band, nice arrangement, tasty solos. Love it!

Thank you so much for these videos, they’re really helping me out learn big band arranging! Just the right amount of content and I love your delivery style. Do you have any videos about how to arrange horns around a vocalist?
Good topic idea! I am preparing topics for this summer. I’ll put it on the list.

I play guitar with a traditional jazz big band with music on paper and also "sub in" with other big bands that uses Tablets (only). My fear on converting to digital is dealing with the DC/DS back pages and CODAs, and variable number of repeats (that can change from gig to gig). How easy is that to navigate with or without a bluetooth page turner? I am thinking of running Mobile Sheets on a Microsoft Surface Pro tablet. Any advice and experience is appreciated. Thank you !
The five dislikes from people who have bad music taste💯💯
Excellent sad voicing lesson. Very concise. Good idea to compare the example without interruption at the end.
I'll keep this channel on my A list.
This is great thank you so much! What if you sell your PDF arrangements of music? Patreon (as you might know!) allows you to sell products on your page and I'd like to sell some of my classical and medieval arrangements to my followers (medleys, rep I've turned into etudes with fingers/bowings etc.)...but I'm confused about the copyright. What are your thoughts? THANK YOU🙏 subscribed!
If the source material is from the classical or medieval periods, you should be safe.
Close Voicing, pt. 1 Summary all of the harmonies within one octave major: major 6, major 6 / 9, major 7, major 9, major 13 minor: minor 6, minor 7, minor 9, minor 11 (no9) dominant: dominant 7, dominant 9, dominant 13 Rules 1. Leave at least a minor 3rd between the top voices 2. Leave out the root (unless the top voice is playing the 3rd / second voice plays the root) 3. If melody is playing the root, put 2nd voice on the 6th (13th) or 11th or 9th Cheating 1. Copy four trumpet parts in trombone staves and drop down an octave 2. Copy trombone parts into Alto 1-Tenor 2 3. Give Bari. Sax the roots
Can you talk more about the actual way you arrange for them. I.e. if writing for 5, do you exclusively harmonised 1-4 and put 5 down the octave. Or do you use 5 part harmonies? Likewise, if you were writing 5th parts for something that was only originally written for 4, what notes would you give 5th? (Assuming you can’t change the other 4 parts).
Great !
Great video - thanks! As a pianist, the other (4th?) sort of notation is the single line melody with chords - often helpful in a shout-chorus section
This song so fire 🔥
Excellent explanations of the basics. Always good to review the basics no matter how experienced one might be. Btw, in general, what was the most common voicing used in big band music of the 30s? Thanks.
By the 1930s, arrangers were using all of these techniques. Standard closed voicing is always a good choice.
In bar 7 triplet quavers you have the root on the top but notice you use the 5th on 2nd voice rather than the 6 or 13th as in your closed voicing lesson? I assume the two are interchangeable
Fantastic Elliot. So grateful to you for doing this. This is such a valuable lesson that answers lots of questions for me.
